For those that really like to get to know the state they are visiting in detail, museums are wonderful resources. In most museums you can read as much or as little as you care to, so you can get an overview or a really detailed account of the museum subject. Take part in a tour with a guide, and you will probably learn even more. In California, there is a museum for everybody. California State Railroad Museum
The California State Railroad Museum (CSRM) in Old Sacramento is a wonderful museum dedicated to, as the name suggests, the rail system which connects California with the rest of the States. With 21 restored locomotives and “a full-scale diorama of an 1860s construction site high in the Sierra Nevada, featuring the locomotive Gov Stanford, as well as a bridge elevated 24 feet (7 m) above the museum floor”.
The California African American Museum
The California African American Museum is found in Los Angeles and consists of a mixture of permanent and temporary exhibitions all celebrating and telling the story of the history of African Americans in California. There is also a ream of public programs and events hosted by the museum.
California Living Museum
The California Living Museum in Bakersfield is a wonderful display of life, both plants and animals, found in California. It presents plants, fossils and artifacts and strives to teach a respect for living things. Some of the species found in the museum include Western Pond Turtles, Birds of Prey, Mule Deer, and Black Bears. This is an absolute must see museum for children and for adults who love a taste of nature mixed in with their museum learning.
Hollywood Wax Museum
Who ever said museums can’t be fun? The Hollywood Wax Museum allows you to finally meet some of your favorite stars ‘in person’, that is, if you are prepared to use a bit of your imagination. Say hello to Clint Eastwood, Elizabeth Taylor, the cast of Baywatch, Leonard Nemoy, Elvis, The Beatles, and Bruce Springsteen, to name but a few of the celebrities who you will find there. Found on Hollywood Boulevard, this museum should be part of your Hollywood itinerary.
