Malibu; the name makes you think of beaches, tanned bodies and sun, doesn’t it? Malibu is an incorporated city in California which sits on the Pacific Ocean, north of Santa Monica in the Northwest corner of Los Angeles County. The city contains over 20 miles (32 km) of beautiful coastline and has various beaches which tempt visitors to its sands from all over the world. The Malibu Pier, is famed for its cameo role in the infamous Baywatch series and hence is one of the main attractions of the area.
Mainly a residential and recreation area of California, Malibu doesn’t have quite the abundance of hotels as many other areas of the state. Saying this, every year, many visitors travel to Malibu, probably at least have of which come to see if the sandy beaches are as great in reality as they are on TV. They are. Its piers also draw visitors, with one public pier in particular boasting unique dual, domed buildings. Another pier, Paradise Pier, is located on the private beach/restaurant at Paradise Cove, draws its own fair share of the public who can park and dine here, creating unforgettable Californian experiences.
Surfing is just one of the many activities enjoyed here, with the winds creating perfect surfing waves on the Pacific Ocean. Nearby Malibu Colony Plaza is a special and unique shopping center. Even more shopping is available at the Malibu Country Mart, an outdoor mall that offers a number of upscale shops that cater to the Hollywood elite. Aside from shopping, Malibu is home to numerous parks and green spaces that can be used for a variety of outdoor activities.
The beautiful Santa Monica Mountains that flank Malibu's beaches are treasured and such a part of nature. Earthquakes, floods and fires have taken their toll on this portion of the California coast from time to time and a drive through the region provides a visual sense of how that could happen. Sailing northward from San Pedro to Santa Barbara in 1835, Richard Henry Dana described in Two Years Before the Mast a vast blaze along the coast of Jose Tapia's Rancho Topanga Malibu Sequit.
The beaches of Malibu are famed for their beauty, and rightly so. A trip to California would not be complete without spending a few days in the Malibu area, soaking up the rays and for a few moments at least, pretending that you are one of the cast of Baywatch.
