Bakersfield is the county seat of Kern County, in the State of California. It is one of the fastest-increasing, large-population cities in the United States of America. In 2007, the population was estimated at just under 325,000 citizens within the city limits, making it the 11th largest city in California.
Ranked as the most conservative large city in California, Bakersfield has been incorporated twice in its history. It is home to the largest carrot-producing operations in the world, Grimmway Farms and Bolthouse Farms. Other crops harvested in Bakersfield include table grapes, almonds, pistachios, citrus fruits, wheat, garlic, and potatoes.
It lies near the southern "horseshoe" end of the San Joaquin Valley, with the southern tip of the Sierra Nevadas just to the east. The city limits extend to the Sequoia National Park, at the foot of the Greenhorn Mountain Range and at the entrance to the Kern Canyon. To the south, the Tehachapi Mountains feature the historic Tejon Ranch. To the west, the Temblor Range, which features the Carrizo Plain National Monument and the San Andreas Fault, is approximately 35 miles across the valley floor. Bakersfield lies approximately 160 km (100 m) north of Los Angeles and about 500 km (300 m) southeast of the state capital, Sacramento.
Bakersfield, one of the sunniest cities in the United States of America, boasts an envious climate, with long, hot, dry summers and brief, cool, occasionally rainy winters. Bakersfield’s mild Autumns and early Springs means that one can easily grow a wide range of crops in it’s soils, for example citrus fruits, grapes, wheat, garlic, carrots, almonds and pistachio nuts. Often, no rain falls in Bakersfield from May through September, leading to some people referring to Bakersfield as a desert.
An active city, Bakersfield hosts numerous amateur sporting events, including shooting, water skiing, soccer, cycling, rugby, youth baseball, tennis, volleyball and rugby competitions. Other, perhaps, more ‘wild’ sporting activities include whitewater rafting, rock climbing, mountain biking, and skiing in the southern mountains.
Bakersfield has had the pleasure of well-known inhabitants such as; the members of rock group ‘Korn’, Mike Lockwood, Buck Owens, Jack Johnson and Jerry Quarry.
